Offshore Storm Preparation Checklist

____Weather forecasts and storm track position
____Best track to sail
____Take best fix, put in log and on chart
____Prepare several meals
____Prepare hot liquids in thermoses
____Feed crew big hot meal
____Get as much sleep as possible
____Those prone, give seasickness pills
Above Decks:
____Remove anchor and chain and secure in lowest spot
____Lash spinnaker pole
____Secure spare halyards
____Hanks on storm jib
____Install storm main or triple reef main
____Set up removable inner stay
____Immobilize wind generator 
____Secure self steering gear, vane and paddle
____Secure dorade vents
____Secure engine air vent
____Remove winch handles from mast
____Fit storm covers (if applicable)
Cockpit:
____Remove anything loose (insure winch handles are secure)
____Snap shackle all cockpit lockers shut
____Remove bimini
____Check security of dodger
Below Decks:
____Check to insure all hatches and vents are closed
____Clear all shelves and put contents in locker(s) or drawers
____Lock all lockers and drawers
____Insure no gear can be thrown about, start at forepeak and work aft
____Install extra high leeboards or lee-cloths
____Lock down stove and oven gimbal
____Prepare ditch bags
____Review liferaft procedure
____Issue flashlights to each crew member
____Clear navigation station of all plotting instruments
____Pump bilge dry, use hand pump to verify capability
____Move heaviest gear to lowest position.  Empty top water tanks first
