Move Over.  That's My Storage Spot!
8/2/00
Blaine Parks

Remember when you were dating?  How nice it was to brush up against your mate and feel the electricity between the two of you?  Well, we are getting reacquainted with those feelings all over again.  Although, I’m not sure the ‘electricity’ is the same as way back then.

We moved from a 2500 sq. ft. home nestled on over 5 acres with a pond.  We now have about 500 sq. ft. of living space to call home for the four of us.  I have a new appreciation for how sardines must feel when they are canned.  It has been a challenge to find homes for all our things and still have room for ourselves, but we’re getting there.  And, all kidding aside, we love our new home.

One of the main reasons we chose Island Packet as our cruising boat was its vast storage capacity.  Janet and I have spent hours staring at piles of our things wondering where in the world they were going to fit – or if it would fit at all   We’re happy to report that everything fit and we were surprised to find “extra” room.  Of course, we gave up an inch (or two) of waterline for that luxury.

We’re pretty sure that 25% of the things we’ve brought aboard will find themselves back ashore within the year.  We’ve committed to take a hard look at what we’re using and discard (or store) those items not being used on a regular basis.  Maybe we don’t need a meat slicer, but I’m voting to keep the blender.  I’ve seen the other appliances sabotaging each other late at night.  Each is hoping to earn a permanent spot aboard while reducing the competition.  So far, the electric knife has had no problems!

A location for 100 pounds of dog food is still in the works.  My tools have also come under close scrutiny by the Admiral and have been consolidated from three toolboxes to one.  The power tools have hidden themselves deep within a locker hoping to be overlooked.  I’m on their side – not telling the Admiral a thing!

Well, it looks like I’m in the way again.  Janet just rubbed up against me (more like a bump!) and I can feel the electricity between us already.  Love in a small boat is such a joy.  If you see me tagging behind in the dinghy, you know I’ve bumped her one too many times.
