Summer 2002
Page 1

It's summer again.  Our plans were for a summer of exploration in Maine and Nova Scotia.  A family emergency changed our plans, giving us another chance to explore the Chesapeake Bay.  We've been to the Bay on three separate occasions and still haven't seen it all.  Here's our latest attempt.

Our summer begins with Charbonneau getting an annual haul-out and new bottom paint.  After almost 6,000 miles of cruising, she was ready for a little TLC.  You can read about her Fairy Tale transformation by clicking HERE.

Max and Bailey get their annual exam with Doctor Melissa.  The top left picture shows the dogs trying to escape before we even get started.  Max looks worried as he waits in the top right photo, then gets his exam.  Bailey shows his bravery by hiding in a corner.

We killed our wind generator while in the Bahamas.  Another fun boating project was rebuilding the entire motor.  She looks (and works) like new again.

We think Bailey missed the boat.  As we laid out our carpets for cleaning while at Janet's mom's home, Bailey had to go lay in the middle of them.  It must have been time to go! (7/30/02)

On our way again.  Elizabeth City always looks lovely in the morning.  That's because we have to leave at dawn to reach the dismal swamp canal in time for their morning lock.  (8/5/02)

The peaceful Pasquotank River winds its way from Elizabeth City to the South Mills Lock, the southern lock of the Dismal Swamp Canal.  (8/5/02)

The South Mills Lock was open for business when we arrived.  After going through the lock, you have to proceed slowly to the small draw bridge.  Both are operated by the Lockmaster who runs back and forth in their vehicle.  (8/5/02)

One of our favorite stops is an overnight stay at the NC Dismal Swamp Canal Visitors Center.  Its the only place we know of where cars and boats share a rest stop. (8/6/02)

Some shots as we passed through the Dismal Swamp Canal again this year.  It is still  our preferred route from NC to Norfolk.  (8/6/02)
ElizabethsDock.jpg (83203 bytes)
Elizabeth's Dock is a free dock just before the Deep Creek (northern) lock for the Dismal Swamp Canal.  Another alternative for staying in the swamp overnight.  (8/6/02)

Charbonneau rests at the Waterside Marina in Norfolk.  (8/7/02)

At anchor in St. Michaels after an overnight sail from Norfolk.  (8/09/02)
