MysticDeadHorse.jpg (91572 bytes)MysticDeadHorse1.jpg (54173 bytes)
Sailors often went to sea owing debts to the captain for their 'gear'. They called this riding a dead horse, since they worked for no pay until the Captain got his money back.   After working aboard long enough to pay back the captain, they would construct a 'horse' from canvas and throw it overboard in the 'Dead Horse Ceremony' symbolizing their new debt-free status.  This was a re-enactment of such a ceremony.  (8/15/01)
